Filis Frederick shares her journey to becoming a follower of Meher Baba. Her search for meaning led her through various philosophical and religious studies, culminating in a series of visions that revealed Meher Baba as the Christ and Buddha of her time. These visions, along with encounters with Baba’s close disciples, solidified her belief and led her to live with some of Baba’s Western women disciples. Filis and Adele, eager to see Meher Baba, were disappointed when their hopes of joining Him in India were repeatedly delayed. Despite the setbacks, they remained devoted, receiving letters and experiencing Baba’s presence through others. Finally, in 1952, they were invited to spend a week with Baba in Myrtle Beach, where they experienced His love and received His blessings. Filis recounts a week spent with Meher Baba and the women mandali, experiencing intimate meetings and a private interview where Baba addressed their suffering. Baba’s approach involved evoking both positive and negative feelings, using personal interactions to address individual karma. A memorable incident involved Baba giving Filis a shell for Mehera, leading to a misunderstanding about leading the group back, which Baba used to teach Filis not to worry. During an open day event, a man experienced bliss after meeting Baba, but later left the group when he couldn’t reconcile Baba’s actions with his preconceived notions of a Master. Baba’s actions often had significant global implications, such as stopping the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Suez Crisis, while simultaneously working on individual spiritual growth. Filis describes feeling like a “human battery,” contributing their energy to Baba’s universal work.
